Year in Review: July 2018 - June 2019
The League of Women Voters of the Rivertowns had an active year. These notes were compiled by our president, Lynn Levine, for the June 15th annual meeting.
Registered or handed out registration forms to 220 individuals at 13 sites or events around Westchester.
Held 8 candidates forums in almost all of our towns from Yonkers up to Ossining
Helped organize or supported two screenings : one at the Jacob Burns Film Center on women running for office (specifically Ilhan Omar from Minnesota) and one at the White Plains Public Library on food insecurity and waste.
Held 3 Hot Topics breakfasts at the Jazz Forum in Tarrytown:
A presentation on the proposed storm surge barriers in the lower Hudson River
A presentation that featured proposals for route 9 (Broadway)
A presentation that brought us up to date on voting reforms recently enacted by the state legislature.
(And our prentation at the annual luncheon today by Peter Arno on the status of the Healthy New York Bill should also be counted as an extremely hot topic!)
Participated in two Naturalization Court proceedings – one in October 2018 and one in May 2019.
Hosted or supported two forums on the Single Payer healthcare plan – one in Hastings and one at the White Plains Public Library.
Helped organize and participate in Running and Winning (for high school students) in White Plains.
Sent two students from Rivertowns schools to Students Inside Albany.
Helped organize and tabled at “Vote Like a Girl” at Sunnyside in early June.
Helped organize and supported the Westchester League’s workshops – and there have been 32 of these so far – one on basic civics called “Know Your Government” and “ Fact or Fake?” which dealt with discerning real news from distortions and lies.
Three people from our league attended the State League Convention in Albany in June.
Attended a presentation at the Friends Society in Scarsdale by Susan Weisfeld on the topic of Quaker involvement in the women’s suffrage movement.
Participated in gathering candidates’ information for Vote411 for the June 25th primary elections.
Attended monthly Healthcare Committee meetings at Madeline Zevon’s house to strategize on advocating for getting Healthy New York passed in the state legislature – we are one vote shy in the senate, and the assembly has voted pro for the past 5 years.
Still working on resurrecting the Environment Committee.
